When Freya Green is sent to spend a few weeks with the great aunt she's never met but who local schoolchildren believe is a witch, she is unimpressed. She's used to being the gooseberry in her parent's relationship and it never ceases to amaze her that they had a child when all they want to do is travel to distant places for weeks at a time without her. It isn't long before Freya discovers that her school friends are right and that her great-aunt spends most of her time in a strange little 'studio' casting spells.

 

One day Freya hears an old telephone ringing in a hidden alcove at her great aunt's home and answering it connects with Nigel Collins, a boy who is somehow calling her from the nineteen fifties. He's in desperate trouble and although she has no idea how to go about it, Freya decides to do her best to help him.
